Writing is a quickly learned skill for those who have a strong desire. Within a year or two, most writing students are ready to charge into the future fully prepared.

But what writing course to choose becomes the question. Take it from one who has tried all the shortcuts and found there were none - you will save yourself time and grief if you will begin at the beginning. Writing courses are an investment, and you are worth the time and money it takes to reach your goal.

The writing course you should choose depends not on what talents you have, not on what experience you have, not on what education you have, but mostly on what knowledgeable level of writing foundation you have. More than likely, you will already have some foundation, but it will have holes in it. That is to say, you will know some things, and not others. In such a case, determine your lowest point, or “hole”, if you will, and begin there.

If you have problems with punctuation, you should start with a Basic Review class. There you will learn how and when to use the proper punctuation, and some of the most common basics. This is an excellent place for older students to begin, as they often need such a brush-up course.

If you are good with English and you have the punctuation skills down pat, you may want to begin in Mechanics of Writing. There you will learn basic sentence structures, foundational writing rules and common mistakes to avoid. This is another good brush-up course.

If you’re up for the challenge of deeper writing rules and more in-depth assignments, it sounds like you’re ready for Creative Writing 101. This is a great class for those who are interested in cross-writing (that is, writing for more than one genre instead of finding one niche and staying in it). Creative Writing will teach you foundational rules of writing, how to write a snappy first paragraph, and will take you into deeper steps with more writing practice. This is an intermediate class.

Non-Fiction writing is for students in the intermediate class. It will teach you how to write for magazines and newspapers. It’s a very good step for intermediates because non-fiction writing pays better than anything else.

Do you like to write stories? Then Short Story writing is the class for you. However, it is also an intermediate class. You should know the rules of English, have good sentence structure, and practice the basic rules of writing before you attempt this course.

If you like to write children’s stories, you would love Writing for Children, but there again, it is an intermediate class. Writing for children is not easier than writing for teens or adults. It can, in fact, be harder, so be sure you have a good foundation before attempting this class. Be prepared with proper English, and the basic rules of writing.

If you are into fantasy writing, you will love Fantasy World. Have you wondered how to invent those far away places you see in your mind? This is the class for you. It is an intermediate class, so be sure you get your foundational courses first. Science-Fiction writing is coming soon. Possibly in the next term.

If you are an advanced student, Wordsmithing is the class for you. There you will learn writing skills that no other class teaches. This is the class that will explain how other authors can string words together in an artistic style. It will teach you to recognize things like assonance, consonance, asyndeton, and many more little known techniques so that you can apply it to your own writing. This is the final stop on how to jazz your writing and edit it with snappy styles and techniques. Wordsmithing is a unique class in that it can be at the beginning of your career, or the end. For me, it was the technique that put me over the top.

If you wonder if you need a certain class to advance to a higher level of learning, the chances are, you DO. Your subconscious is telling you your foundation isn’t complete. Don’t challenge yourself with more advanced classes. You need all the rules of writing in order to succeed. Skipping ahead usually means having to return to a lower class at a later time to pick up what you missed.

When you have your foundation and pass through the various stages in order, the advanced classes will blend and mesh all your learning experiences into one vision. I can’t reiterate this strongly enough - get your foundation first. Start at the bottom and learn every single rule. You’ll save yourself grief in the future.

FROM David Letterman to Bob Hope, Don Rickles destroyed them all. As Jimmy Kimmel said when the Emmy-award-winning legend came on his show recently: “Please hide your ethnicity . . . and welcome Don Rickles!” No. 1 - To David Letterman: “Who…

Are you naturally funny?

Do you leave your audience rolling on the floor?

Or have you every made a “Funny Bomb?”

I titled this article “Avoid the Funny Bomb” because I want you to learn from the priceless lessons that I have learned. And yes, even if you are naturally funny, you need to read this article. I am committed to creating a “Funny Bomb Free Society” one person at a time.

I am almost too embarrassed to tell you why I called this the “Funny Bomb.” However, because I am committed to your success, it is my obligation to tell you this story in hopes that this article will save you the humiliation, remorse and dead stares that I got.

Anyone that has attended my workshops or seminars already knows that I am a huge silly goofball. That has always been my source of presentation humor. It seems to go over pretty well because I create an environment in my workshops and classes were others can let their inner goof ball come out and play.

I have never had a knack for telling memorized jokes. As a result, I decided to attend a course on using humor in presentations a few years ago. During the course, I picked a few jokes that I was committed to using in my next presentation in Colorado where I was a guest presenter. I was so excited to apply what I had learned. I thought the jokes were absolutely hysterical.

Here comes my Funny Bomb!

I had anticipated great results from the few jokes that I told, however I had the exact opposite response. With each joke that I had told, the audience stares became more intense. Right after my first “Funny Bomb”, I was a fast sinking ship. I felt like screaming “Somebody please get me out of here!” Once the damage was done, I had lost total connection with some of the audience members. Even though I thought the jokes were funny, had clean language and were appropriate for adult audiences, many of the audience members disagreed. Without going in to all the horrific details, I want you to remember this. Please learn from my mistakes. Never ever make fun of anyone else except yourself, your pets or your family, even if you think it is harmless humor.

Avoid this other Funny Bomb - Making the “Funny Story Announcement.”

One big mistake I see over and over is when an individual announces when they are getting ready to tell a joke or a funny story. They start a joke by saying “Here is a funny story.” or “A funny thing happened when I …” The challenge is when someone announces it is going to be funny; they have set themselves up for potential failure. Unless the joke or the funny story is absolutely hysterical and leaves everyone rolling on the floor, it will make you look bad. When you tell them it is going to be “funny”, you have to deliver something that is exceptionally funny. Their expectations of your joke or story will be set really high and you are almost doomed to failure.

So what do you do instead? Surprise them by just telling the story. If they find it funny, it will be an unexpected sensational experience and they will love you. If they don’t, you saved yourself from a huge disaster. If they weren’t expecting your story to be funny, they would barely notice if it turned out to be a Funny Bomb.

Knowing how to use humor in a presentation is essential to leaving your audience wanting more and keeping them entertained.

Five cops, including three sergeants, were suspended for letting a prisoner stroll out of an apparently unlocked holding cell in The Bronx - an escape that wasn’t detected for hours, authorities said last night. According to sources, as many as…

Ever felt urged to steal a piece of bubblegum from the grocery store and given in? Then you are likely training to become either a kleptomaniac or an addictive compulsive thief. Do not despair

Do you drink ice water… or have drinks straight out of the fridge?

There’s a saying in Chinese medicine that goes: “Above all else, protect your digestion.” By “digestion”, they mean processing of both FOOD and FLUID.
Think about this…

If you aren’t processing foods properly, you aren’t turning food into BLOOD and ENERGY (”Qi,” as the Chinese call it) for your organs to function properly - so your organs are literally “fatigued” and can’t perform their jobs well.

Your heart can’t function. Your lungs can’t function. Your kidneys, bladder, liver, gall bladder, stomach and intestines are all “fatigued” and can’t do their job.

And, your immune system doesn’t have the energy to protect you from cancer, colds, flu, radiation, etc.

And that’s just the problems with not processing foods. If you’re not processing fluids properly…
…fluid collects in your tissues (Chinese medicine calls this condition “Dampness”.)

This fluid ultimately congeals, and becomes a condition called “Phlegm” (this includes, but is not the same as, having phlegm or mucus.)

This “Phlegm” leads to obesity, depression, urinary infections, dementia, seizures, cysts and tumors, sinus headaches, allergies, all breathing problems like sinusitis, asthma, COPD, and a host of other problems.

Furthermore… the processing of food and fluids includes elimination… so you will have problems with constipation, diarrhea and urination.

*************Sidebar****************

If you look through my website you’ll see that
all the diseases listed there have improper eating as one of the main causes of that condition.

In some cases, the problems come directly from the food itself. But, in most cases, the problem comes from how the food negatively affects your digestion, with the weakened digestion then leading to the disease condition.

************************************

So, how do cold drinks damage your ability to process food and fluids?
Here’s a simple analogy…

When you put water on the stove, it moves faster… there’s more activity.
When you put water in the freezer, it slows down (freezes)… there’s less activity.

Cold decreases activity. Heat increases activity.

Chinese medicine describes the act of digestion as a warm process. Energy (and life itself) is warm. When we are dead, we’re stone cold dead…

It has been shown through thousands of years of observation in China that, if we drink chilled or cold liquids, we decrease our digestive activity.

We hurt this warm process of digestion (cold negates heat).

FIRST OF ALL, this causes food and liquid to be digested poorly. Similar to when your car can’t completely combust fuel, food isn’t digested properly and you’re left with a “sludge” (which, in Chinese Medicine, is called “Stagnant food” and/or “Phlegm“.)

That “sludge” is often the root cause of problems such as a weak immune system, weight gain, fatigue, cysts, allergies, sinusitis and certain types of headaches.

SECONDLY, warming up the cold fluids consumes energy (heat), leaving you with a net loss of energy.

THIRD, your weakened digestion now can’t produce good quality energy from the food you eat, leaving you with less energy for your organs to function properly…

…do you get the picture? You can (and will) end up with nearly every disease imaginable.

What to do about this?

You might be lucky enough to have strong digestion and not feel too affected by cold drinks. Consider yourself blessed. But, if you’re already in a somewhat weakened state…

…drinking COLD drinks might be one of the “straw’s” that breaks the camels back. Here’s my advice:

If you have ice water with your meals, stop.

If you drink your drinks cold from the refrigerator, stop.
Drink no more than a teacup of room temperature or warm water (or green tea) with your meals.
If you eat at restaurants, tell the waiter “No ice, please!”

One the biggest offenders is the ice water you get out at the restaurant. Just before eating a big meal, you put out your “digestive fire” (read that as DAMAGE your digestion) with that freezing cold water. Big mistake!

Iced drinks really aren’t good for anybody. Nature didn’t intend for us to frequently drink cold or frozen liquids. Refrigerators and freezers are extremely recent in terms of the history of human diet.

Not to mention, there’s just not a lot of refrigerators out there in nature!

*** Think about the implications of cold foods here, too. Obviously, they’re equally damaging. ***

It may take some getting used to, but drinking room temperature or warmer water is a good first step toward being healthier.

The threat to the world from Bird Flu is more serious now,
than it was when I wrote my first article on the subject in
May, 2005. entitled “Will Avian Flu Become Pandemic”
since then it has spread to numerous other countries,
but thankfully at this stage it has not, as yet, mutated to a
strain that can transfer from Human to Human.

It is so easy for this virus to mutate, it can happen as simply
as a person catching Bird Flu from poultry or birds, when that
person, has already caught one of the more common strains of
Influenza.
This could enable the Bird Flu virus to then cause a pandemic
outbreak of this deadly disease throughout the world.

History of the Bird Flu and its Spread.
It first started in South Korea at a chicken farm in 2003, a
couple of months or so later, it was detected in Vietnam, then
an outbreak was found in chickens in Indonesia, Thailand confirms
the death of a six year old boy, this was the first known death
from Bird Flu.

China also has problems and Malaysia has found the virus in
chickens, near the Thailand border.

This year, 2005, Bird Flu has been found in ducks in the Philippines,
Japan has had an outbreak in chickens, then it was also found in
Russia.
In October, 2005 it was discovered in Turkey and Romania, so you
can see that it is spreading across the globe, slowly but surely.
The very latest is that has now been dicovered in Greece.

It is spread at this stage by birds, mainly migratory birds that fly
north or south from the Asian region, where they can take it to
Russia and Europe, or in the other direction, south to Australia,
New Zealand and the Pacific region.

The European Union has warned that there should not be any panic,
though it has told the 25 nations that make up the Union to start
stockpiling supplies of anti viral drugs. It has been confirmed in nearly
all cases the strain of virus is the highly virulent and lethal H5N1.

In London, it has been confirmed that Britain is at risk and they have
suggested that all people that could be vulnerable, should consider
having normal Flu injections.
The United States Senate, on September 29, 2005, voted to provide
almost $US4 billion to purchase a stockpile of the two anti viral drugs.

Future Prospects

Professor Ian Frazer of Brisbane, Australia, who with his research team,
after many years of heartache, trials and tribulations, have announced
that they have now perfected a vaccine that will prevent Cervical
Cancer and this vaccine should be available in 2006, this is a world
breakthrough and a historic discovery, he now is thinking of turning his
talents to the H5N1 virus, he and many of his colleagues are convinced
that it is only a matter of time before this virus will start attacking
humans and cause a pandemic.

It has been estimated that the death toll throughout the world, if this
pandemic should start, could be as high as 40 million people.
Currently, humans are catching the virus from birds that have the infection, through their saliva or faeces, which when dry can be inhaled by humans. The authorities state emphatically that it can not be transmitted through
eating poultry.

What Can You Do

It is recommended by a number of authorities that you should consider
having the normal human flu vaccine.

There are two drugs available that can help, but are in short supply,
also quite expensive, Tamiflu and Relenza.

Take all the sensible normal precautions.

Your Immune System, this is your natural defence against all illnesses
and diseases. Try to ensure that you Immune System is functioning as
efficiently as possible. Make sure that what you eat and drink is natural
and as nutritious as you can make it.

BY all means, call it a comeback. Twenty years - this week! - after the debut of MTV’s “Headbangers Ball,” heavy metal is experiencing a renaissance, and Dee Snider, one of the ’80s genre’s most visible figures as lead singer of Twisted Sister…

The following information is based strictly on the opinion of myself and other sports moms. Looking for an answer to the question, does youth sports keep our kids out of trouble? Surprisingly enough 100% of the woman that posted their answer to this question said yes.

Sports teaches our kids how to get along with other players and with their coach, it teaches discipline, and team building tools. It keeps your kids off the sofa and away from their video games, off the streets, and out of trouble because they’re in a gym or at the ball field playing or practicing. To play school sports kids have to maintain certain grade point averages, because of this you often times see active students maintain a higher GPA than someone not as active in school activities.

As a parent Never use sports or clubs as a punishment. Sports/clubs give your kids a sense of purpose and belonging. I’m not saying don’t punish your kids, but take away things like the car, movies, shopping trip to the mall, or their cell phone (which our kids believe to be the worse punishment of all), but never use constructive activities as a means to hurt or punish.

If your kids are involved in sports, show them your support and attend their games. As a working mom I know it’s difficult to make every game, but attend as many as you can. This shows your child you’re proud of them, and you support them and their team. Get involved! Maybe you can’t coach or can’t keep score, but offer to bring the kids drinks, ask the coaches if there’s anything you can do to help.

During games, don’t yell at the players or the umpires, demonstrate acceptable behavior. Nothing looks worse than having a parent yelling or cursing during a game. This is not only bad sportsmanship, but sets a poor example for the players. As a player how bad would you feel because your parent cost your team an out or was asked to leave the game? If you want to cheer for your team, by all means DO IT! But do so in a positive fashion.

Let’s encourage our kids to be active, teach them the importance of team work, respect and discipline. Show them you support them 100% and encourage them when they’re down. It’s not about winning or losing, it’s about getting out there and giving it 110%, by stepping out onto the field they are already winners!

Traffic building for your website is a primary directive. Without traffic you have no potential for a conversion rate of any measure.

If you can agree with me that traffic building is important, do you know how to go about improving your site traffic?

If not, let’s take a look at ten rudimentary marketing tips that can result in more visits, more customers and a greater income.

1) SEO. These three letters stand for Search Engine Optimization. SEO is a skill set designed to help you construct your website to appeal to the automation that reviews your site for determining site rankings in a search engine. If you don’t pay attention to SEO you may not find your website ranked well.

2) PPC. This strategy is also known as Pay Per Click. This is an advertising strategy designed to encourage people to visit your site via a third party site that features products, services or content that relates to your website.

3) Email marketing. By developing a list of email contacts that have expressed an interest in your website and/or product you can send periodic emails that encourage them to visit your website for new offers or freebies.

4) Blogging. Individuals and businesses use this as a way to keep site visitors informed of industry related news in a very personal format. Blogs encourage visitors to drop by your main site and promote traffic-building objectives.

5) Forums. These are online bulletin boards where interactive conversations are encouraged. In virtually all situations links to your primary business can be included in something called you “signature” and can further enhance traffic to your online location.

6) Podcasting. When you develop an audio program that can be downloaded through your site this is known as podcasting. Many consumers are interested in audio downloads like a podcast that can either entertain or inform. This strategy can keep customers coming back for more.

7) RSS. This service provides customers with a notification when you ad new content to your site. The three letters stand for Real Simple Syndication and allows you to syndicate or distribute your content to subscribers.

8) Social media. Examples of this service would include sites like MySpace or Facebook and allows you to connect with a wider group of individuals. You can post web links that will draw others to your primary website.

9) Search engine marketing. Like PPC this strategy is advertising based and requires payment for advertising use and click throughs. Using this method can allow your website to appear in an advertising section of various keyword search terms when individuals use a search engine to locate businesses like yours.

10) Video streaming. When you incorporate video into your site you may find that individuals may come either for the entertainment value or for the information it can provide. The effects of this tip can be enhanced when you add RSS to all new video streaming files you add to your website.

Make SEO your starting point in traffic building and then work on mastering as many of the other nine skills as possible.

Every body is different, and everyone knows that for some people finding clothes that fit right is more difficult than for others. This is certainly the case when it comes to bra shopping, it can be quite difficult to find the right plus size bra. There certainly is no shortage of plus size bras on the market; lingerie makers have pretty much all come on board to the fact that women are all different in shape and size, no longer focusing solely on sizes 1 to 5. However, it is still not easy to find the plus size bra that is the best fit for both your body shape and your personal comfort.

Finding a bra that is almost perfect might be nice, but is not the best idea, as it can not only have a negative effect on your appearance, but it is also very uncomfortable and bad for posture, not to mention the chafing that no woman wants to deal with. If you happen to be one of those ever unlucky women that just can’t seem to find that right plus size bra for your fit and figure, there are some tips that you can follow to get the right fit for you. Get out all those return receipts out, because it’s time to throw them out!

Companies that only sell “unmentionables”, clothes and other items for larger females are becoming more commonplace. You will not find items for younger girls, or other pieces that can be found in a multitude of shop. If you have ever been referred to as “plus size”, and have trouble finding well made items that fit you in typical retailers, you should consider looking in one of these shops. Since they are specialists, they will have a better selection of items than other retailers. That includes those who advertise their inclusiveness.

Don’t continue buying bras in a 36DD just because that’s the size you were 3 years ago. Seek advice from a professional fitter and you may be pleasantly surprised at the impact a well fitted bra can have. Wearing a plus size bra can make sure you get the perfect fit for you so that you can wear your bra in comfort. Shops like Victoria’s Secret are a great place to go and find trained fitters who can help you find the perfect bra for your body shape. A properly fitted bra will feel like a second skin so you won’t need to worry about straps digging in or chafing anymore.

Let’s face it; plus size bras are not made small. If you have large breasts, love them that way. Trying to push them down with a bra that is just too small for you is never going to work, no matter how good you think it looks. Looking like you have a smaller chest than you do is not worth being severely uncomfortable and if you haven’t realized that by now, it is time you do. Not everybody was born with a small perky chest, and those who do probably want to be more like you. Love your body the way it is, and revel in your plus sizednessplus size bra and all!

What does grieving mean? Grieving is something that we all go through when we lose someone close to us. This will make it necessary for us to make many changes in our lives. Grieving can be very exhausting, both emotionally and physically. That is why it is important that you take care of health. Grieving is a process that can take weeks, months and even years. Grieving is usually associated with the death of someone important in your life. It is different for everyone. Grieving is the process of learning to live your life without someone you care about. It is a normal adaptation to loss.

Death

Death takes away, but grief can give back. Following a death, everyone works through these stresses differently. Don’t try to avoid the bereaved person. Don’t pry into personal matters. Don’t ask questions about the circumstances of the death; but do be open to hearing whatever the bereaved wants to say about it.

Feelings

There are many feelings associated with this process. They include guilt, embarrassment and anger and are part of the restorative process. Feelings of failure, shame and blame exacerbate the sorrow of loss. Feelings of loss, especially with regard to a loved one, can never completely go away. Feelings of loneliness, emptiness, isolation, and self-pity can also surface during this phase, contributing to this reactive depression. Feelings of despair at the injustice and unfairness of the death of the person you love are often coupled with difficulty in sustaining personal faith in a God who can be viewed as loving.

Family

As a trusted friend or family member, you have the opportunity to monitor the bereaved person. Especially when you live away from family, true friends can offer shoulders for you to cry on until you begin to recover. Talk openly with your family and friends so that everyone’s grief can be expressed. Keep seeing supportive family and friends who you enjoyed spending time with before your loss. Most of the support that people receive after a loss comes from family and friends.

Depression

Depression and sickness can be spawned in the midst of grief. Depression is more than a feeling of grief after losing someone or something you love. Warning signs that they are having difficulty adjusting include depression, poor concentration and lack of interest in school. Depression involves the absence of positive feelings and is different from the deep sorry experienced at the loss of a loved one.

Grieving is OK, though, because it means that you really cared about something. Grieving is the process of learning to live your life without someone you care about. Grieving is not forgetting, nor is it drowning in tears. Grieving is part of the human nature. Knowing and understanding that grieving is a process can help defuse feelings of powerlessness and provide some measure of consolation, hope and peace.
